Mechanism of action of
Selenium YeastSelenemeteonin is actively absorbed in the small intestine and is transported with the blood through the transport mechanism. The body of animals isn’t able to distinguish between classical methionine and selenemeteonine, which can thus be transported to the liver for the synthesis of selenoproteins or for sending to others for inclusion in proteins. On the other hand, sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) is passively absorbed by the small intestine and, before the incorporation of selenoproteins, releases free radicals, converting to selenide (Na2Se). This process takes place with the expenditure of energy. Excess inorganic selenium is excreted in the urine and doesn’t accumulate in the tissues.
